FROM THE DAY WE WERE FOUNDED, Loomstate has kept a very clear mission in mind: to value people and the planet above the clothes we make, to set up a production system that rewards everyone who contributes, and to be open about how we operate so other companies have an example to follow.

We try hard to do all our work with the right tools, the right thinking, and the right outcomes. Together, this has helped create high-quality clothes people love, communities that are stronger and healthier, and a planet that breathes easier. And we’re just getting started.

NEW PRIORITIES

Before Loomstate, our founder was part of a clothing brand called Rogan, which had serious fashion cred and industrial-inspired jeans that made headlines. But when he decided to start a new clothing company in 2003, he learned more about how conventional cotton was made and was disturbed at how destructive and single-minded the usual methods were. In Loomstate, he wanted to build a brand that was an antidote to the problems created by massive, industrial cotton farms. For starters, Loomstate decided to use only 100% organic cotton.

THINKING BIG, GOING SMALL

We reset our approach, which meant going after smaller, local farms to raise our 100% organic cotton. This took us to Turkey, where we worked with local mills to find farmers cultivating organic cotton to our standards. And it included sourcing new production methods that were effective but safer for workers and the environment, and finding local factories to weave, dye and cut our fabric. By working collaboratively, exchanging wisdom, and bringing out the best in everyone at each step, we started to make good on our goal of shared success. It was an exciting time full of possibility.

DIALING UP THE STYLE

At the time, organic cotton clothing still had a scratchy, “crunchy” stigma. But we were one of the first companies to give these clothes a design-led street cred, which in the process helped bring responsible practices into the mainstream. Our designers looked to workwear culture for inspiration, drawing on artistic talent to reinvent “eco-clothing” in modern fits, beautiful color palettes and cool detailing. The result—high-quality, durable clothes for a casual lifestyle—quickly started turning heads.

GROWING THE COMMUNITY

In 2009, we were approached by Chipotle Mexican Grill to design their team uniforms. It was a perfect Loomstate partnership: our values aligned with Chipotle’s of offering high-quality products made in a system that cared for the workers supporting them, and for the environment. And the uniforms were a hit, upping employee morale as they elevated the brand look. Soon, other partnerships with like-minded brands followed, and today our Loomstate designs proudly outfit hundreds of thousands of workers around the country.

BUILDING AN EQUITABLE ECOSYSTEM

With consistent purchasing from brands like Chipotle, in 2010 we began working with Chetna Organic in India, a cooperative of thousands of farming families. This brought us a steady source of high-quality organic cotton and helped us support the farmers, makers and their families there, bringing us closer to our dream of a system that balanced economics with human and environmental needs. While Chetna is a global leader in sustainable organic cotton farming, a system is only as sustainable as its people—so Chetna also focuses on women’s empowerment, minority projects, market access and community-wide food security for its members. It is 100% farmer-owned and operated.

VERIFIED, VALIDATED IMPACT

Loomstate wants to be the most trusted clothing brand around, so we make sure people don’t have to take our word for anything. A growing number of industry organizations monitors clothing producers for environmental and human impact, using science-based measures and increasingly rigorous standards. Loomstate has earned all of the toughest certifications available, and today we’re one of just 16 companies worldwide recognized for organic cotton fiber sourcing by the Textile Exchange.

BETTER FUTURES, EVERYWHERE

Creating systems that are renewable and restorative, connecting communities of talent and labor for mutual benefit, and valuing humanity over products isn’t a heavy lift, when all of us are lifting. We’re proud of where Loomstate is today, but we’ll keep looking for new and better ways of doing things, because they’re always out there. Our business model means better clothes for you, better lives for farmers and makers, and a healthier planet for us all. And the greatest validation for what we’ve done is watching others starting to copy how we do it.
